ENGL 251 - The Graphic Novel

This fully online course is a study of the graphic novel as a cultural form. We will consider the historical emergence of the term “graphic novel”; the term’s controversial status in contemporary critical usage; and the position of graphic novels in contemporary literature and culture. In order to do so, we will employ critical approaches such as media and format studies; political economy (production, consumption and circulation); theories of worlding, interpretive communities and subject production (including authors); theories of taste, distinction and difference; and theories of transmedia and platformization.
